I arrived in Madrid today at 9:45 am. The airport was so incredibly quiet it was unreal. I walked pulling my two heavy rolling bags along the walking escalator things for a good 15 minutes to get to customs where they simply stamped my passport and let me through! I went down a few escalators to get to the baggage claim and then went to the ARS cafeteria where Lola my Sevilla program director was supposed to meet us.
At about 11 am one other girl and I were picked up by the Bilbao program director and put on a bus to our hotel in Madrid. We arrived at Hotel Moderno in the middle of Madrid and 5 other students and I went out to lunch at a little restaurant. I ate 1/2 roasted chicken for lunch with some large looking fries that tasted healthy. Then we walked around the city and saw Plaza Mayor, it was very busy.
I returned to the hotel and met my roommate Mary. She is really great and a lot of fun. We took a 2 hr nap and then went to our first meeting to introduce ourselves and learn about our piccell phones. Then we went to dinner at 8:30. It was at a nice little restaurant that served us a salad, I got sea bass, and then sorbet and a cream puff for dessert. After this we decided to go out to one bar for my roommates birthday (her 21st!). I got a pint of Heineken and our waiter was actually from Dallas! He said that they make 7$/hr serving, and usually make some small tips off of the younger generation.
Around 12:30 we headed back to the hotel. Our directors, Kepa and Lola, have been a lot of fun and helpful for getting around the city.
Now I am about to go to sleep for the night, I am just so thankful that I got this opportunity to come here!

1/29
The packing frenzy now begins as I prepare to leave tomorrow.
It seems to be the trend that people successfully pack light on the trip there, but are unable to bring all the recently acquired goods back with them. I think I will do the opposite. I am stuffing my bags and hope to throw away used containers, leave old towels behind, and eat all packed snacks by the end of my trip.
One thing I wish I had done more this month was review my spanish. I think I will regret this come Sunday.
